Chapter 1: HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning)

Lesson 1/1 | Study Time: 15 Min

Subtopic 1: Types of HVAC Systems

In the realm of building services, HVAC systems play a pivotal role in ensuring the comfort, health, and productivity of building occupants. The primary function of HVAC is to regulate indoor air quality, temperature, and humidity. There are several types of HVAC systems commonly used in modern buildings, each with unique features and applications. The most basic classification divides HVAC systems into centralized and decentralized systems.

Centralized HVAC systems serve multiple zones or even an entire building from a single, central location. These systems are often preferred for large-scale commercial buildings due to their efficiency, ease of maintenance, and ability to balance the climate across extensive floor areas. Examples include chilled water systems and central air handling units (AHUs) combined with a network of ducts and diffusers.

Decentralized HVAC systems, on the other hand, are installed in specific areas or rooms. These systems are suitable for smaller buildings, renovations, or spaces where independent control is desired. Examples include split air conditioners, packaged terminal air conditioners (PTACs), and window units.

Another important distinction is between all-air, all-water, and air-water systems. All-air systems deliver conditioned air through ducts; all-water systems, such as fan coil units, circulate chilled or hot water; and air-water systems combine both methods to optimize performance in certain building layouts.

To illustrate, a shopping mall may use a centralized chilled water system for cost-effective cooling, while a small office might rely on split units for individual room control. Selection of the right HVAC system depends on building size, usage, energy efficiency objectives, and budget considerations. By understanding the different types of HVAC systems, building services professionals can make informed decisions to ensure optimal indoor environments
